Recently Added Features

It's easier than ever to develop publication-quality documents using the Mathematica environment. The many added features since Mathematica 4 include XML import and export, improved HTML output, new palettes for indexing and cross-referencing documents, author tools to assist in the writing of books in Mathematica, a new slide show environment for easy presentation of Mathematica notebooks with a click of a button, and new symbols for representing planets, musical notes, and gothic numbers.

XML Import and Export

Mathematica includes full support for import, export, and manipulation of XML documents; DTDs and style sheets for saving Mathematica notebooks and expressions as XML documents; and support for XHTML. Extensions of XML that are now supported allow notebooks and expressions to be stored or read as the standard tree structures used elsewhere in the XML world. Supported extensions are NotebookML and ExpressionML, which allow notebooks and individual expressions respectively to be expressed as XML constructs.

MathML Support

Mathematica supports MathML 2.0, the emerging standard for representing mathematics on the web. Endorsed and recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and developed with strong support from Wolfram Research, MathML provides the foundation for the inclusion of mathematical expressions in web pages and XML documents.

AuthorTools

AuthorTools, an add-on package included in Mathematica since Version 4.2, simplifies the creation of technical books and articles in Mathematica. The package contains functions to process notebooks for print or online publication. Using AuthorTools, you can:

  • Create a table of contents
  • Create an index
  • Create a BrowserCategories file (for adding information to the Help Browser)
  • Create bilaterally formatted cells (for displaying examples of Mathematica calculations)
  • Extract all cells of a particular type and save them in a desired format
  • Insert objects to display the current values of variables such as the date, time, and file name
  • Set printing options such as headers and footers

Each of these operations can be done in either a single notebook or a set of notebooks that make up a project. For example, you can generate a unified index or table of contents for a book consisting of several notebooks.

Slide Show Environment

A new screen style environment allows presentation of notebooks in a slide show format. This new feature makes it easy to turn multiple notebooks into a single, easy-to-use presentation at the click of a button. It is no longer necessary to use third-party slide show viewers to present material that you have developed in Mathematica.

Mathematica Fonts

The Mathematica fonts have been renamed Mathematica1, ... , Mathematica7. Recent additions to the character set include new planetary symbols, musical symbols, and double-struck numbers.
