Cluster Analysis Capabilities Added

See What's New in Wolfram Mathematica 6

A wide range of optimized cluster analysis capabilities have been added for Mathematica 5.1. Clustering of sets of numeric (n-dimensional), string, and Boolean data is computed using a range of different methods--selected automatically or manually--with built-in and user-definable distance functions.

Support is also included for computing and visualizing hierarchical or agglomerative clustering.

Example: Cluster Analysis

The following animation shows the clustering of data with different distance functions and numbers of cluster sets. Note that the same FindClusters function was used in all cases.

Example: Making a Dendrogram

Clustering of data can be computed in a hierarchy of levels and displayed using built-in dendrogram plotting. In this example, the words in "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain" were analyzed.
